The museum was completed in November 1997 and opened to the public on June 29, 2011. The main functions of the museum include artwork collection, research and exhibition as well as promoting artistic exchanges. As of now, the museum is home to more than 36,000 pieces of artwork including paintings and sculptures.
While being committed to promoting local arts, the Guangdong Museum of Art has established a series of cultural brands with great international influence such as the Guangzhou Triennial and Guangzhou Photo Biennial. The museum also dedicates itself to promoting international cultural exchange by hosting a range of international cultural forums.
